“Few football talents have been as polarised in recent years as Youssoufa Moukoko. Since the 15-year-old striker first stood on a German football pitch, the Cameroon native has had to deal with questions about his age.
Moukoko’s insane goal scoring rates in Borussia Dortmund’s youth teams further fuel the age debate. Meanwhile, his club wants to challenge FC Bayern in the Bundesliga title fight. Best with Moukoko’s help.
“I spoke to the coach about Moukoko this week and we want to integrate him into the squad,” Michael Zorc said at the pre-match press conference against TSG Hoffenheim. The sporting director of BVB made no secret of the fact that the club is already pinning high hopes on the teenager.
Moukoko prepares for professionals
“He should immediately learn to train and play with adult professionals,” said the sporting director, who recently extended his contract until 2022.
In the Moukoko project, BVB wants to benefit as soon as possible from the recently decided reduction of the minimum age for Bundesliga players to 16 years. “Because of the rule change, he can be used for us in the Bundesliga from November, when he turns 16,” Zorc said. It is planned that Moukoko will complete the pre-season with the pros. Most recently, pictures showed Moukoko preparing for the demands of seniors with an athletic trainer.
In the duel with Bayern, the runner-up wants to continue to rely on the development of his own young talent in addition to high-calibre transfers. “We have a very great interest in involving the boys from the youth field,” Zorc stressed. “We will discuss intensively in the next few days who else comes to the pros.”
