“Twitter wants to give users the ability to publish tweets as voice messages. A spoken tweet can be up to 140 seconds long, if you talk longer, you automatically start the next message.
“Sometimes 280 characters isn’t enough, and some conversational nuance is lost,” Twitter product designer Maya Patterson and software developer Remy Bourgoin said Wednesday on the Twitter blog.
The feature will initially only be available in the Twitter app for apple’s iPhones and iPads, Twitter announced Thursday night. However, everyone should be able to listen to them. When the feature will also be available for devices running the Android operating system was initially unclear.
Appears as an audio file
On the personal Twitter user account, the new function can be used via the icon of a “wavelength”. If the user clicks on the icon, he comes to a recording button to record a voice tweet. This in turn appears as an audio file that can be clicked on.
In the blog post, Twitter did not address how it would implement measures against hate speech, hate speech or even dangerous misinformation in spoken tweets. Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter have now moved to scan posts to discover such content instead of waiting for user messages.
Most recently, they have cracked down on false information about the coronavirus that could harm people, as well as in attempts to keep citizens out of elections. Two tweets from US President Donald Trump were also criticised – one added a fact check on Twitter, while another was labelled “potentially violent.”
Trump is one of the most famous Twitter users in the world. On some days, he sends up to 50 tweets from his account, sometimes starting in the early hours of the morning, shortly after getting up. Some tweets consist only of capitalized keywords such as “CHINA!” or “LAW AND ORDER!”. It remains to be seen whether Trump, too, will use this new feature to reach his followers.
A Twitter spokesman told CNN news channel that they were working on additional surveillance systems ahead of a broader rollout of the feature. The voice tweets will also be checked for information from users and, if necessary, action will be taken.
